The Storm Warden
The lighthouse keeper had tended the coast for forty years.
He knew the moods of the sea as well as his own heartbeat. He knew when fog would creep across the water, when rain would arrive before the first cloud appeared, and he knew the stories.
Every sailor along the coast knew them too. When dark clouds gathered beyond the horizon and lightning stitched silver paths through the sky, crews tied silver coins to their sails and spoke a single name.
Maelira, The Storm Warden.
Some spoke it with reverence. Others with fear. The keeper listened to them all and said little.
From his tower he had watched storms rise from the sea for decades. They always gathered over the same stretch of water, a place where the ocean seemed deeper than depth itself. Even beneath a clear sky, the waves there carried a darkness that sunlight never reached.
One autumn night the greatest storm of his life appeared. Thunder rolled across the coast, waves climbed like mountains, lightning flashed so often that night seemed trapped between moments of day.
The keeper climbed to the lantern room and looked out over the sea, then he saw her. Far above the water stood Maelira. Cloud and lightning swirled through her flowing form. Her hair streamed across the sky like storm currents and light burned within her eyes, bright enough to rival the bolts that danced around her.
She raised her arms. The storm answered, erupting below her as a vast shape rose from the depths. Levianthe.
The ancient guardian coiled through the waves, its silver-black body cutting through the water like a living tempest. Foam burst around its wake as it circled beneath its mistress.
The keeper watched in awe. Then he saw something moving far below. A shadow.
At first he mistook it for the sea floor itself, then it shifted.
The darkness stretched wider than Levianthe, unfolding from the abyss beneath the ocean. Ancient currents twisted around it and the sea seemed to recoil from its presence.
The thing began to rise.
At once Maelira's eyes blazed and lightning poured from the heavens. The storm screamed and Levianthe surged forward. Sea and sky collided in a fury of thunder and spray. The shadow fought upward while lightning drove it back. Waves crashed against one another like armies meeting in battle.
The struggle lasted until dawn. When the first rays of sunlight touched the horizon, the darkness retreated.
Levianthe slipped beneath the waves as the storm unraveled and Maelira faded into cloud and mist.
By midday the sea lay calm once more. The keeper stood alone in the tower, staring across the quiet water.
Far beyond the horizon, where sea and sky meet, Maelira, the Storm Warden, still keeps her watch. And beneath the waves, Levianthe waits beside her.
